It looks like a poem for the choice of word, sounds, feelings that the writer wants to express. The story is rich of images and experimental language. Gabriel is a very sensitive boy and his emotions are great. At first he felt offended but then when she tells him the reason why she was so sad he understand that her love that her love for the past is also his rival. She gets a very beautiful image and Gabriel desires her very much, when they get to the hotel, Gretta refuses Gabriel. During that night her old boyfriend had been waiting her for the whole night in the cold rain but they didn’t meet and she left. During this party there is folk music and Gretta goes back to her young life when she was in love with her old boyfriend and was going to leave Galway. So that night Gabriel and Gretta go to the party and rent the room in very fashion and expensive hotel in the centre of the town. He used to organize parties at his house and always invited a lot of people. As regards the main action, it concerns the annual party for the end of the year at Gabriel’s own house. Gretta is from Galway, a little town not far from Dublin. Gabriel can be seen as Joyce himself while Gretta can be seen as his wife Nora. It is also autobiographical in a certain way because it is the story of Gabriel and Gretta.
It is a great piece of English literature and it is quite different from the previous stories, the writer starts writing in a different way, it is more similar to the ‘Ulysses’ because it was written many years later.
